AI-Powered Routing

Every transaction is scored and routed in real time by BIN, geography, card type, ticket size, and live processor context.

What is AI Routing? AI-powered routing is the process of selecting a payment path for each transaction using configured rules and current processing signals.

How does a transaction get routed?

A token is retrieved, the transaction is evaluated against routing criteria, and an eligible path is selected. If a recoverable decline occurs, configured cascading can try another permitted path; the outcome informs subsequent routing decisions.

  • 1. Retrieve the token from the vault.
  • 2. Score the transaction against configured criteria.
  • 3. Route to an eligible processor or MID.
  • 4. Cascade on an eligible soft decline.
  • 5. Feed the result back into routing context.

What can a no-code routing builder control?

A no-code builder lets payment operators express routing policies without waiting for an engineering ticket. Rules can account for card type, geography, ticket size, processor, MID, and decline handling while retaining human review of the configuration.

  • Use plain-language policies such as sending an eligible card type above a chosen ticket threshold to a chosen MID.
  • Define geography-aware and acquirer-aware paths.
  • Set decline-code retry rules and review them as operating conditions change.

How do cascading and subscription retries work?

Smart cascading can reformat or retry an eligible transaction, switch MIDs, or use another acquirer according to policy. For subscriptions, retry timing can reflect decline codes alongside card-updater and network-token refresh workflows.

  • Do not retry every decline: configured policy distinguishes eligible recovery attempts from declines that should stop.
  • Subscription recovery is designed around a deliberate retry and updater process.

What is better routing worth?

The value of better routing is fewer avoidable payment failures and less manual intervention when payment conditions change. The specific impact depends on the merchant, traffic, configuration, providers, and underwriting; PayFull does not publish an unsupported routing-lift figure.

  • Measure the effect against your own approved reporting and operating baseline.
